What philanthropic organization would you start?

Posted on Apr 7th, 2007 by Penn : Lost again... Penn
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for April 07, 2007:

If I have the financial freedom (backed by Bill Gates) to pursue a philanthropic scheme, I would focus on today's young people living in the streets of our cities.  Young people who were driven from their homes and families for one reason or another, left without a second choice.  They walk in our cities, wearing faces aged and battered by harsh realities.

Part of this supposed organization would be devoted to immediate crisis intervention, providing a secured shelter and appropriate individual, group, and/or family counseling (detoxify and rehab, if necessary).  Afterwards, the youth would be given an invitation and encouraged to join an interim program and housing whereby the youth would be slowly introduced to various activities that engage the body, mind, and spirit in relation to others, while continuously receiving individual guidance from compassionate adult and peer advocates.  If reasonable, the youth would be registered at a local public school or an in-house-schooling program using sophisticated educational methods that rivals those of prominent schools.

A second part of this supposed organization would be a dormitory-style housing program for the youths who have completed the interim program and have chosen to stay in the organization.  Additional programs would be offered to engage the youths in sports, music, arts, technology, etc.  These youths would be given free scholarship to pursue higher education while integrating them to mainstream society and working America, at the same time receiving continuous guidance.

This supposed organization would employ compassionate professionals in the fields of education, psychology, social work, law, arts, sports, and many others.

The plan is:

  • - to allow displaced youths to facilitate healing to gain back what they have lost in the midst of their struggles (self-esteem, trust, etc)
  • - to help them discover their potentials and empower them to nurture and strengthen those potentials
  • - to help integrate them into mainstream society not only to become functioning individuals, but actively contributing members of our society.

This supposed organization would be called,

‘Empowered to Choose (securing the future).'

Its amazing how with the security of money we can all attempt to change the world. My goal in life is to start a non profit for inner city low income youth in communities where there aren't alot of opportunities for them to branch out and grow and develop interest in which they can pursue as a career and engage with others in similar situations and of similar interest.

Children are the great innovators of the future and their security and aspirations are what help others recognize their potential. My organization would help to give them perspective on the future and all the potential activities and things that they can do that are outside of their beaten down communities and outside of the steretypical ideas that are formed in low income communities of not really reaching a goal further than a labor, government position.

It a place of cultural and physical development sparked by current social issues and a motivation for change, the children can interact in social groups and come up with ways in which they can help promote another organizations goals for a good cause by raising awareness and experiencing first hand the situations that take place around the world, by becoming more involved and acknowledging that there are bigger things in the world and nations who are in desperate need for aid and assistance. I believe that by reaching out to help others, the children can help themselves and see ways in which they can develop and search for meaning outside of their scope and societal realm of thought.

Promoted in inner city schools and volunteer websites as well as other means of communications, we can get todays youth to realize the potential that they have as both an afterschool program, weekend event or summer program. The ability for them to grow is immense.  The organization itself would be called: “I Change for You”.
